01

THE CONTEXT

What to understand

CVE-2026-6973 is a critical security vulnerability impacting Ivanti Endpoint Manager Mobile (formerly MobileIron Core). In vulnerable releases, exposed API endpoints fail to enforce authorization token validation across internal service boundaries. Remote unauthenticated actors can send crafted API calls to generate administrative sessions, modify enrolled mobile device configurations, deploy unauthorized configuration profiles, and exfiltrate enterprise device metadata.

02

HIGH-LEVEL CONCEPT

How the risk can develop

This is a conceptual overview, not a procedure for reproducing an attack.

  1. An unauthenticated attacker sends an HTTP request to an exposed administrative API endpoint on the EPMM server.
  2. The authentication gateway fails to validate session credentials before proxying the call to the internal service bus.
  3. The internal management handler interprets the request as coming from an authenticated administrator context.
  4. A privileged session is established, allowing the attacker to push arbitrary device commands and download enterprise inventory data.
03

WHY IT MATTERS

Potential impact

Complete takeover of mobile device management (MDM) infrastructure, deployment of malicious profiles to managed enterprise mobile devices, and sensitive organizational data theft.

04

BE AWARE

Signals to monitor

  • Web server access logs showing unauthenticated requests to /mifs/services/ or /api/v2/ administration endpoints.
  • Creation of new administrative users or policy deployments outside business hours in EPMM audit logs.
  • Unusual outbound network connections from the EPMM appliance to unverified external IPs.
05

PUT DEFENSE FIRST

Recommended defenses

  1. 01Apply Ivanti security patches and RPM update packages for EPMM immediately.
  2. 02Restrict access to EPMM administrative interfaces to trusted internal management subnets.
  3. 03Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) and mutual TLS for all administrative API consumers.
  4. 04Audit enrolled device lists and configuration profiles for unauthorized changes or newly added certificates.
