SECURITY GUIDE
Remote Code Execution in Microsoft Exchange Server (CVE-2026-42897)
Examine how unauthenticated deserialization gaps in mail client communication components allow server compromise.
THE CONTEXT
What to understand
CVE-2026-42897 is a critical remote code execution vulnerability impacting Microsoft Exchange Server. The issue resides in backend web services handling serialized objects passed through Exchange Web Services (EWS) and OWA protocol handlers. Because of incomplete validation of data contracts during client-server synchronization, a remote attacker can transmit serialized payloads that trigger code execution inside the high-privilege SYSTEM context on the mail server.
HIGH-LEVEL CONCEPT
How the risk can develop
This is a conceptual overview, not a procedure for reproducing an attack.
- An attacker sends crafted serialized data packets to exposed Exchange Web Services endpoints.
- The endpoint deserializer processes the incoming object payload without strictly validating allowed type models.
- A gadget chain within common .NET runtime libraries is triggered during deserialization.
- Arbitrary code is executed on the Exchange server under the NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM context.
WHY IT MATTERS
Potential impact
Full administrative takeover of enterprise Exchange mail servers, persistence inside Active Directory domains, reading and alteration of confidential emails, and internal network pivoting.
BE AWARE
Signals to monitor
- IIS web server logs showing unusual POST requests to /owa/ or /ews/ endpoints with non-standard user-agent headers.
- Exchange worker processes (w3wp.exe) creating suspicious child processes (cmd.exe, powershell.exe).
- Anomalous ASPX webshell files created within Exchange front-end or back-end virtual directories.
PUT DEFENSE FIRST
Recommended defenses
- 01Install the Microsoft Exchange Security Update released for CVE-2026-42897 immediately.
- 02Enable Extended Protection for Authentication on all Exchange virtual directories in IIS.
- 03Restrict direct Internet access to Exchange management portals (ECP) and EWS endpoints using reverse proxies and VPNs.
- 04Implement file integrity monitoring across Exchange web directories to detect webshell creation.
