SECURITY GUIDE
Malicious File Parsing Execution Flaw in Microsoft Office (CVE-2026-26113)
Learn how memory corruption during complex document element parsing can enable code execution upon opening crafted files.
THE CONTEXT
What to understand
CVE-2026-26113 is an arbitrary code execution vulnerability in Microsoft Office resulting from flaws in the parsing of compound document structures. When processing documents with nested XML shapes or legacy drawing elements, a boundary check failure leads to heap corruption. By enticing a user to open a crafted document via phishing or email attachments, an attacker can trigger memory corruption and achieve code execution with the user's privilege level.
HIGH-LEVEL CONCEPT
How the risk can develop
This is a conceptual overview, not a procedure for reproducing an attack.
- A victim receives a crafted office document via email or download and opens it.
- The Office application parser loads the document and processes nested drawing or graphic elements.
- A size calculation discrepancy triggers a heap buffer overflow in the parsing component.
- Program execution jumps to attacker-controlled instructions within the context of the logged-in user.
WHY IT MATTERS
Potential impact
Execution of unauthorized commands on endpoint workstations, lateral movement within the corporate domain, and theft of user desktop credentials.
BE AWARE
Signals to monitor
- Office applications (winword.exe, excel.exe) spawning unusual child processes such as rundll32, powershell, or curl.
- Application crash logs mentioning memory access violations in document rendering DLLs.
- Email gateway alerts detecting unusual compound file structures or obfuscated macro/drawing payloads.
PUT DEFENSE FIRST
Recommended defenses
- 01Apply Microsoft security patches for Office products via Windows Update or enterprise patch management.
- 02Enable Protected View and Application Guard for Office to run untrusted documents inside an isolated sandbox.
- 03Configure email security gateways to quarantine documents with anomalous nested structures.
- 04Enforce Attack Surface Reduction (ASR) rules prohibiting Office applications from spawning child processes.
