SECURITY GUIDE
Pre-Authenticated Server-Side Request Forgery in SonicWall SMA1000 (CVE-2026-102255)
Analyze how unvalidated upstream redirection in network edge appliances enables internal network reconnaissance and cloud metadata access.
THE CONTEXT
What to understand
CVE-2026-102255 is a pre-authenticated Server-Side Request Forgery vulnerability discovered in SonicWall SMA 1000 series appliances. The issue exists in gateway routing logic that forwards unauthenticated incoming management requests to secondary backend endpoints without validating whether target destination IP addresses belong to loopback, link-local, or protected internal networks. Attackers can leverage the gateway to query internal HTTP services and cloud provider metadata APIs.
HIGH-LEVEL CONCEPT
How the risk can develop
This is a conceptual overview, not a procedure for reproducing an attack.
- An external client sends a request with a customized destination URI to an edge appliance handler.
- The gateway forwards the HTTP request on behalf of the caller without egress filtering.
- Protected internal services or cloud metadata endpoints respond to the gateway, exposing sensitive data.
WHY IT MATTERS
Potential impact
Enumeration of private internal subnets, theft of cloud instance credentials via metadata endpoints, and pivoting into unexposed management interfaces.
BE AWARE
Signals to monitor
- Inbound HTTP requests to the perimeter containing loopback (127.0.0.1) or link-local (169.254.169.254) addresses in query or header fields.
- Anomalous internal HTTP traffic originating from gateway network interfaces toward non-management ports.
- Cloud audit logs showing instance metadata token requests from atypical source processes.
PUT DEFENSE FIRST
Recommended defenses
- 01Deploy vendor firmware hotfixes addressing the unvalidated redirection flaw.
- 02Enforce IMDSv2 with hop-limit 1 on cloud-hosted appliances to mitigate cloud credential theft.
- 03Implement egress firewall rules restricting edge gateway management interfaces from querying internal networks or metadata services.
- 04Limit external accessibility of appliance management interfaces to trusted administration jump hosts.
